Blueberry - now known as Max

After 5 months of living here, we realized just how much we missed having a cat, and our daughter, realllllly wanted a cat. So we went down to the shelter and let her check out all of the cats and she picked the perfect one!! His name was "Blueberry" at the shelter but he has since been renamed "Max." He is black and long haired. He came already neutered and declawed in the front. Max fit right into the family from the very beginning. He absolutely LOVES our daughter - he rubs against her and purrs and he cries for her attention (she's only 3, and, while she appreciates the importance of being gentle, I think this cat is still pretty amazing)... and she feeds him his wet food treat every night. Most of his day is spent laying in my lap for hours on end and batting around balls of yarn (cliche, I know, but he loves it). He has also become comfortable enough with our dog to sleep right up next to her and they even play very well together. He is absolutely the most perfect cat for our family and we love him to pieces!!!    ~Kristin

Daisy - used to be known as Shorty, now owned by Britney

Britney is in the coast Guard and started coming to the shelter to volunteer on her off time. We love having her come up here and help us out, she does such a wonderful job. After volunteering here for a while a small little pit-bull puppy showed up. She was so little and scared and we needed a foster home for her for the night, Britney offered right away and thats when she fell in love with her and has had her ever since.

  • Manage and operate the Kodiak Animal Shelter ( #1 Priority)
  • Provide assistance in the selection and adoption of pets
  • Help owners find new homes for their pets
  • Maintain a lost and found log
  • Provide financial assistance for spays and neuters to families in need
  • Provide information on animal care and responsible pet ownership

  • Sell annual dog tag licenses

The Humane Society of Kodiak has been in existence since 1993.  Our organization was contracted by the City of Kodiak to operate the animal shelter in 1995, changing it to a “No Kill” shelter for friendly, adoptable animals in 1997 thanks to community support. We are not members of, nor are we formally affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society.  We have our own bylaws and mission statement and operate independently to service Kodiak Island in it’s entirity, servicing the City, Borough, Villages, and the Coast Guard Base.  Our focus, and the point to our fundraising, is to prevent the cruelty of animals through education and other implementation by promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing the population of abandoned pets through spay/neuter programs and to promote the proper care of animals impounded at the shelter.  Our board is made up of community members who enjoy the Alaskan lifestyle and have lived on Kodiak Island for many years.
